The Rotational Molding Process & Roto-Molded Cases from PSI

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

The rotational molding process is a three-stage, no-pressure, plastic molding process.

  • 1) Heating Stage: The mold slowly rotates in two planes as heat transfer causes the plastic charge to melt and conform to the interior of the mold.
  • 2) Cooling Stage: The mold moves to the cooling station where is cooled by either air, water spray, or a combination of the two.
  • 3) Load/Unload Stage: The product is removed from the mold. A new charge is inserted into the mold and the process begins again.

Rotational molding is a cost-effective process allowing manufacturers to create light-weight, seamless, stress-free products to meet precise requirements much more economically than injection molding or blow molding. The rotational molding process allows molders to produce a wide range of items, from toy dolls to agricultural equipment to custom protective cases.
