When you’re building a custom case for your expensive and delicate equipment, there are a lot of choices you can make. Molding options alone come with several different choices including injection molding, blow molding, and rotational molding. While each type of molding has their uses, rotational molding is one of our favorites here at PSI. To help you get a better understanding of what it is and why you might want it, today we’ll give you look at the basics of rotational molding.

What Is Rotational Molding

In brief, rotational molding is the process of melting down plastic to create a molded case using a rotational heating process. This rotation, while the mold is in the oven, means that polymers do not settle in any one place and instead are spread evenly for a strong, even finish. Once the mold has been completed the final product is cooled using a fan system. This cooling process sometimes takes longer than the initial creation as the ovens used range from 500-700º.

Why Should You Use It

Rotational molding is often reasonably time-consuming compared to other methods, so why do so many people use it? To start, the final product is extremely strong and durable because of its highly even finish and high heat treatment. Additionally, the rotational molding process allows for extreme customization that other methods simply cannot compete with. The use of different types of plastic allows for different effects making customization much more affordable, all while creating a seamless final product that will be incredibly long-lasting. Thanks to the low startup costs and the inexpensive materials it winds up offering the most customization for a comparatively low price. You may not be able to get a rotationally molded case short notice, but the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience.
