Labor Day: Saluting the American Working Man & Woman

In 1882, as an act of solidarity, more than 10,000 New York workers band together to march the city streets. Following the parade, the Central Labor Union, which organized the New York event, urged labor organizations across the country to hold similar events, something the Labor Union referred to as the “workingman’s holiday.”

By 1885, many industrial cities across the United States were celebrating this Labor Day. Then, in 1887, Oregon became the first state to pass a law recognizing the first Monday of September as a holiday. Several other states would follow suit.

Finally, in 1894, Congress passed an act making Labor Day an official national holiday.
