How Does Rotational Molding Work?

Rotational Molding

Why is rotational molding a good method for making custom cases? Learn below!

Rotational molding is another method that we use here at PSI Cases to shape plastic into a case form. This process differs from injection molding and vacuum forming and is ideal for creating plastic custom cases that stand up to wear and tear. Today we’re going to discuss the process of rotational molding and how it creates great custom cases.

The Process

Basically, the process of rotational molding involves melting plastic down into a mold of a case. This mold is first heated to a very high temperature with the polymers inside. Rotational molding gets its name because the oven used is consistently rotated to ensure an even form. Once this plastic polymer is melted and sticking to the walls of the mold, the hollow part is rotated to ensure that it spreads evenly and doesn’t settle in any particular spot. Afterward, the molding is cooled with a fan and then opened to remove the case.

Why Choose Rotational Molding?

Rotational molding is a popular method for making custom cases for a few reasons.

  • While rotational molding takes a longer period of time to produce a custom case, that extra time allows that case to be stronger and more durable. This can be a major advantage, especially if you don’t need to mass produce a lot of cases.
  • Rotational molding allows for many options in customizing your case to suit your needs. For example, pre-made sheets of plastic can be utilized to add different effects before the polymers are used. This creates a seamless product that holds up well.
  • While the process takes a little longer than other methods, rotational molding still offers a cost-effective method for manufacturing your custom case. With material costs low, you get a high-quality case made for a price that won’t break the bank.
