What Is Rotomolding?

Rotomolding

Rotomolding is a great manufacturing method to build a sturdy case.

Rotomolding, short for rotational molding, is a manufacturing process used to create some custom cases. They’re a kind of thermoplastic. Rotomolding has been around for a long time–since the 19th century–and has been used popularly especially since the 1940s. The method has gained even more popularity in recent years, but what exactly is it?

Heated Molds

Using a heated mold, plastic is melted which forms the body of the case. The mold is rotated so that the plastic forms to the mold’s shape. Because rotomolding requires the plastic to heat until its melting point and then cool down again until it solidifies, it can take quite a long time. It’s an intensive process that results in a superior product.

Specialized Cases

Since rotomolding can take such a long time, rotomolded cases aren’t produced in the same quantities as other molded cases. But rotomolded cases come with a ton of advantages. The cases are more durable, produce less waste to create, and are more customizable. Rotomolded cases could definitely be an interesting avenue to explore if you need something that’s particularly durable, with thicker walls and more hardware design options.
