Popular Shipping Cases: The Difference Between Roto-Molded & Injection Molded Cases

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

The term “Shipping Cases” refers to several different types of protective cases, including Roto-Molded Cases and Injection Molded Cases. So what are the major differences between these two popular types of shipping cases?

Roto-Molded Cases

Roto-molded cases, a term short for rotationally molded cases, refers to a style of shipping cases manufactured using the rotational molding process. A plastic charge is placed into the case mold, which is slowly rotated in two planes as heat transfer causes the plastic charge to conform to the mold. Next, using either air, water spray, or a combination of the two, the mold is then cooled. And finally, the case is removed from the mold and a new plastic charge is inserted.

The end result is a durable and cost-effective shipping case.

Injection Molded Cases

An injection molded case is similar to a roto-molded case in the way that it performs after manufacturing. However, the manufacturing process for these cases is extremely different. The injection molding process involves feeding plastic into a heated barrel, mixing it, and pouring it into a mold. The plastic eventually cools and hardens to the specified configurations.

The Difference Between Roto-Molded & Injection Molded Cases

At the end of the day, the only major difference is the manufacturing processes for both Roto-Molded cases and Injection Molded cases. Other than that, these cases are very similar in a lot of ways. Both types of cases offer superior strength and durability. Both types of cases are designed to survive the most brutal situations and ensure the safety of your delicate equipment. Both types of cases are available through Packaging Strategies Inc. (PSI).

Located in Baltimore, Maryland, PSI offers roto-molded and injection molded cases built specifically to fit your item and its dimensions. We accomplish this through a combination of 3D modeling design and first article sampling. This guarantees that the custom case will perform correctly, eliminate delays in delivery schedule and not exceed cost expectations.

At PSI, we pride ourselves in offering our clients total packaging solutions, from design and prototyping to fabrication and custom cushioning solutions!

Roto-Molded Cases Baltimore: Cost Effective Shipping Cases from PSI

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

What are Roto-Molded Cases?

Roto-molded is the commonly used terminology for cases produced using the rotational molding process. This three-stage, no-pressure, plastic molding process is extremely cost effective and allows for the production of light-weight, seamless, stress-free cases.

What is the Rotational Molding Process?

  1. Stage 1: In this stage, the heating stage, a plastic charge is placed into the mold and rotated slowly in two planes as heat transfer causes the plastic charge to spread and conform to the mold
  2. Stage 2: In the cooling stage, the mold is cooled down using either air, water spray, or a combination of the two.
  3. Stage 3: In the final stage, the load/unload stage, the case is removed and a new plastic charge is inserted into the mold.

The rotational molding process can also be used to produce a wide variety of items, including toy dolls, agricultural equipment, and, of course, shipping cases.

What are the Benefits of Roto-Molded Cases?

For starters, the rotational molding process is much more economical than injection molding or blow molding, creating cost-effective shipping cases. Additional benefits of roto-molded cases include:

  1. Durability
  2. Strength
  3. Customizable
  4. Integrated metal parts and graphics
  5. Unlimited design possibilities
