A Glossary of Custom Case Terms

Custom Case

Confused by custom case jargon? We’re here to help.

If you are looking for a high quality custom case to transport sensitive, expensive, or critical equipment, but the industry jargon is throwing you for a loop, don’t worry. Below some of the most common terms are explained, so you can be sure that you are getting exactly the custom case you want and need.

Anti-Static Foam

If you are looking to transport electronics, you will need a case that contains this foam. It has anti-static properties that help to protect electronics from damaging electrostatic shock while they are in transit.

ATA Rated

You may have seen cases that are labeled ATA rated, but what does that mean exactly. Who is the ATA? The ATA is the Air Transport of America trade association’s regulations. They set the standards for equipment which is being transported by air. The ATA’s Spec 300 entails a number of important standards that a custom case built for transit has to meet. One standard is that containers need to be coated with non-corrosive products.

EPS Foam

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam is a material often used for a custom case that has been outfitted on a budget.

G-Factor

This number is used to express the fragility of an item that will be transported within the custom case. The G-factor refers to the maximum amount of G-forces a piece of equipment can endure before it starts to suffer from damages.

G-Force

You might remember this term from your high school physics class. It is the measurement of the acceleration of a falling object used as weight. It is used in foam packaging in order to measure the shock equipment is subjected to when dropped from different heights.

IP65

This refers to a waterproofing and environmental sealing rating. There are numerous ratings which refer to the extent of protection a case offers objects from dust and other factors.
